Caruaru is a medium sized town in a steady urbanization growth. Located at about 130 Km from Recife, the Capital of the State, Pernambuco. Since 1986 an ISCON farm, Nova Vrajadhama, was established a few Kilometers from the town, and since then has endeavoured in the process ofexpanding Srila Prabhupada`s teachings. I served in this project for a few years, and in the late 90`s there were several actions in the town`s prison by a group of members from different religions and the Vaishnavas were also invited to participate.
Now based in Sri Dham Mayapur with the family I`ve been doing services in the area of education, community building and self sufficiency. So, in the last December book distribution marathon I decided to assist in the process of distributing to re- experience that level of surrender which the task demands. Sri Gauranga, as the Supreme Controller, manifested many very unexpected activities to me and among them is the one I`m narrating to you. Meditating on how to distribute Srila Prabhupada`s books, a remembrance of HH Candramauli Swami giving a lecture for the Brazilian Namahatha in Sri Mayapur came to my mind. He described many incredible stories and filled us enthusiasm to give mercy to the inmates.
By Krishna`s inconceivable mercy all 1400 inmates from Caruaru got sponsored
books of Srila Prabhupada along with a simply wonderful ball made by the temple devotees. In the day of the program the manager of the prison gathered her team of most well behaved inmates. and a lecture was given to them by myself and a priest who is a sympathiser of Srila Prabhupada`s movement. After my presentation, the priest spoke on the verse 2.13 of BG
and presented the concept connecting our conditioning to the Lord Aparavydia). Then the sponsor addressed the inmates showing how nicely two different religions were working together and how this was an example to everyone. At this stage they were invited to pray with the priest and the program ended with all the members chanting Hare Krishna in a blissful mood.
The director of the prison was very happy with the outcome and is open to more programs.
